The Latin American Recruitment and Educational Services (LARES) program raises funds to endow awards for UIC Latinx college students.  Your contributions help to financially support students and expand the leadership opportunities available to them.  Current awards include the Near West Side/Hull-House Latino Community Award, the Latino Alumni Award, Cesar Chavez/Frida Kahlo Award and the Otto Pikaza Award.  The LARES General Fund supports special opportunities for UIC students.  (Donations that do not identify a specific award will be placed in the LARES General Fund.)

Near West Side/Hull-House Latino Community Award – Recognizes the best essay, research project, performance or artistic submission on a topic related to Illinois Latinx community history or current social realities.

Latino Alumni Award – Selects students based on a combination of financial need, academic achievement and community service.

Cesar Chavez/Frida Kahlo Award – This leadership award also considers financial need and academic achievement.

Otto Pikaza Award – Selects students with strong academic records in the fields of science, the arts or the humanities who value cooperation and coalition building.

LARES General Fund – A discretionary fund that supports special projects including guest speakers, conference expenses and special opportunities including costs related to educationally related travel abroad programs.  This fund also helps support other projects including outreach initiatives and the LARES Summer Success Seminar for entering freshmen.

Contributions of $25, $50, $75 or $100 or more are tax deductible as allowed by law.  Those giving $500.00 or more will join the LARES 100 and have a commemorative name plate on an honorary plaque to be located at LARES.
