LARES Summer Ambassador

The LARES program is seeking a reliable, enthusiastic, and self-starting student leader who enjoys working in a diverse and fast-paced work environment. The LARES Summer Ambassador is a student leader who will perform various support functions with the LARES Orientation. The LARES Orientation includes student engagement, academic and social programming, and communication efforts. The LARES Summer Ambassador is an essential link between LARES newly admitted students and their families, LARES academic advisors, and staff across campus.

The ideal candidates will be bilingual in Spanish and English, knowledgeable in UIC campus life and resources, able to work with a variety of students, parents, and staff, have good presentation and communication skills, and have a deep commitment to the LARES mission and program. Students will gain valuable experience with recruitment, program development, and student engagement. The position is a seasonal summer commitment, and its responsibilities last from mid-May 2026, through mid-August 2026.

Job Duties

Through the selection and training process, each LARES Summer Ambassador will be assigned primary roles depending on their individual interests, expertise, and strengths. At a minimum, each LARES Summer Ambassador will assist with the tele-counseling of newly admitted First-Year and Transfer students, LARES First-Year and Transfer Summer Programming, and student engagement initiatives.

Under the management of the LARES Ambassador’s supervisor(s), the student will perform all of the following duties:

  • Support the successful transition of newly admitted LARES students
  • Input data for reports using Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Present about the LARES program to admitted students and families
  • Promote the LARES program at campus events
  • Tele-counseling projects
  • Assist with office inventory, such as office supplies and marketing materials
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned

Under the management of the LARES Ambassador’s supervisor(s), the student will perform one of the following special projects:

LARES Summer Programming 

  • Assist with the LARES First-Year Orientation Program, foster connection with incoming first-year students, and present information on the LARES student experience
  • Represent LARES at the UIC Flames Resource Fair via tableting and sharing information about LARES to First-Year and Transfer students and their families
  • Serve as a resource to students and families by answering general questions

LARES Summer Peer Connections 

  • Work with LARES Staff to develop and implement monthly social and academic programming for first year and transfer students

Job Qualifications

  • A UIC degree-seeking student enrolled for at least 6 + credit hours during the fall 2026 semester
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English (Verbal, Written, and Reading)
  • Ability to work with a diverse and Latinx student and parent population
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Strong leadership involvement on or off campus, understanding of college culture and resources on campus
  • Clear enthusiasm for this opportunity, an interest in learning new skills, and a creative spirit are highly desirable
  • Self-motivated and solution-focused students with a genuine interest in working with first-year and transfer students
  • Must be in good academic and disciplinary standing with the university
  • Ideal candidates must be available from mid-May, 2026, to mid-August, 2026, with minimal conflict schedule restrictions.

Visiting College Recruiter

This position recruits prospective high school and transfer students through the development and implementation of integrated marketing and recruitment strategies necessary to meet the enrollment goals of the University of Illinois at Chicago. This position will represent the University’s Hispanic Serving Institution designation and interests during high profile events and to a wide range of constituents (e.g. state legislators, community leaders and organizations, parents and students) and venues (e.g. college fairs and programs, local, state and national conferences and events)

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serve as a primary field representative of a recruitment territory, fielding questions and responding to inquiries from prospective and admitted students through varied communication channels and through a range of recruitment activities, and benchmarks for the purpose of increasing applications and enrollments.
  • Maintain a travel schedule and represent undergraduate admission at the LARES program at various recruitment events, high school and community college visits, and yield activities through the designated territory.
  • Maintain a regular office schedule, acting as the point of contact for prospective and admitted students via telephone, email, and arranging and completing campus appointments with prospective and admitted students.
  • Host and assist with recruitment and yield events to attract prospective and admitted students to the campus and meet the enrollment needs of the University.
  • Nurture relationships with students/parents, high school counselors, teachers, and administrators to provide pre-admission advising relative to the recruitment and admissions processes.
  • Regularly present (either in English or Spanish) to campus visits and at off-site local and regional prospective students and parents.
  • Seek out opportunities to engage and meet prospective students by participating in local, state-wide, national or international school events, college fairs, community organizations, etc.
  • Respond to field questions and inquiries from prospective and admitted students through various communication channels: (e.g. individual appointments, telephone, email, and social networking).
  • Represent the University during on-campus events to provide information about available offerings (including but not limited to academic programs, resources, opportunities, facilities, etc).
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of recruitment strategies and make recommendations for program changes.
  • Compile, assess and interpret student data, event outcomes, recruitment trends, market area trends and report findings to senior leadership.
  • Update and report regularly on recruiting events and outcomes.
  • Manage and coordinate the first-year and transfer scholarships.
  • Expected to complete recruitment reports to the recruitment coordinator and associate director.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Experience in a college/university admissions office or related field.
  • Fluency in Spanish (written, verbal, and presentation).
  • Ability and willingness to work evenings, overnight, and weekends as required.
  • Ability and willingness to travel extensively, including overnight travel locally, statewide, nationally, and internationally, up to 80% during peak recruitment periods.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills, including experience communicating with students or families.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-based environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Public speaking or group presentation experience (e.g., recruitment events, orientations, workshops).
  • Experience using student information or CRM systems such as SLATE, Banner, and/or iAdvise.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations in higher education or community-based settings.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills related to tracking and reporting recruitment or student engagement data, with experience collecting, organizing, and managing student or prospective student information accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Experience initiating or managing projects independently.
